Farewell old friend. (or Thrill of the Grill)

11 years ago we got our first proper BBQ. Not one of those little Hibatchi things or a tinfoil dish full of charcoal but a gas BBQ. Now some of the purists think gas is the anti-christ when it comes to outdoor cooking but most gas units allow for the addition of wood chips for adding flavour. This one was no exception.

This BBQ was a housewarming gift from the in-laws. (Thanks again guys!) Its done amazing service over the years. 5 different homes, 2 years in various storage facilities, a trans-Atlantic crossing via sea container. Its outlived 3 covers and burned through at least 40 tanks of propane. Its on its third set of lava rocks. Survived Calgary winters with the near daily freeze thaw of Chinooks. Prairie summer heat, English rain and wet, its taken it all. If you will pardon the pun its done 'Sterling' service.

We had hoped to get another year out of it but it was not to be. Sadly the bolts on the frame have stripped from years of re-tightening, the burners have corroded and started to split leading to flareups.

Ok, ok its a guy thing to become attached to our tools and toys. I looked into getting a new set of burners and a new frame just to keep it going. Turns out the cost of shipping would be higher than getting a one. So that's what we've had to do.

A few weeks ago we did our annual trek to the Chelsea Flower Show where just about every garden gizmo, tool, gadget, and furniture item can be found. While there we came across the distributor for the new beast. For once luck was on our side. We had looked at the identical model in the local garden centre recently. The distributor was selling off the range at half their wholesale price. Woo hoo. We basically got it for 1/3 the retail price + a cover, tools, and griddle plate too.

Will the new one be as good or last as long as the old one. Who knows. If we get even half the life out of it we'll be happy. Now if it would only stop bloody raining long enough for me to test it out.
